The IGP (Internationale Gebrauchshunde Prüfungsordnung) for utility and defense dogs is a dog discipline recognized by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale).

IGP is a sport dog discipline to evaluate the zootechnical qualities of a specific dog for reproductive purposes.

The regulation provides for athletic sports events and morpho-character tests with different regulations and parameters depending on the breed.

Each competition is generally divided into three phases: A-Tracking, B-Obedience, C-Protection.

TRACKING

The tracking phase tests the dog's ability to execute scent work and concentrate and apply themselves to the exercise in a specific manner for the test duration. The dog must independently follow (without help from the handler) an olfactory trace drawn by an unknown person and report the presence of objects left on the ground.

OBEDIENCE

During this test, the dog is asked to heel beside the handler throughout the trial and perform exercises with different difficulty levels.

The judge graded all exercises according to speed and accuracy. The dog must be seen to work collaboratively with his handler and with joy and enthusiasm for the work.

PROTECTION

In this phase, the judge requires an assistant to help test the courage of the dog to protect itself and its handler. The assistant is known as a 'Helper' or 'Decoy'. A series of prescribed exercises follow. The handler directs the helper to move around the field, makes various attempts to escape, attack the dog, attack the handler, and is escorted to the judge. The dog is expected to engage with the helper without hesitation and with courage and must always obey the handler. Any signs of fear, lack of control or inappropriate aggression will result in termination.
